Saint Patrick’s Day Activities For The Office

Looking to show off a little Irish spirit this March, but can’t drink green beer at the office? There’s still plenty of Saint Patrick’s Day activities for the office that are sure to bring out the Leprechaun in everyone! Don’t worry, these fun St. Patty’s Day activities are sure to be HR approved, and don’t require a single drop of Irish Whiskey.

If you’re looking to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at home without alcohol or you want to share some of your Irish heritage with co-workers here’s some ideas. I’m not sure if St. Patrick took a vow of sobriety, but there are definitely ways for you and your peers to have a good time this St. Patty’s Day even without the booze!

Irish Theme Costume Party

Everyone knows that St. Patty’s Day is the day to break out your emerald attire. However, you can kick things up a notch by taking a page out of the Halloween playbook, and have an Irish themed costume party. Dress up as a member of U2, a certain Disney princess, a drunk guy riding a leprechaun, or just throw on that kilt you’ve been hanging onto!

Anyone who isn’t willing to go all-in on a Celtic outfit can just pick up a pair of shamrock glasses and green beads to wear around the party. If you can get your co-workers to participate, this is a great way to celebrate.

Traditional Irish Fare Pot Luck

Irish soda bread for pot luck

If you can’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at the office with beverages, why not try it with food? Organize a pot luck lunch with your co-workers and have them make their favorite Irish dish. You can even turn this into a contest, and have them bring in the recipe to be crowned at the end of the meal.

You’ll obviously have the corned beef and cabbage entry, but encourage your co-workers to branch out. Celebrate St. Patty in style by having them submit other traditional fare for tasting. Hopefully, there will be at least a couple foodies in the group that excel no matter what they cook up!

Screening of “Brave”

Here’s a great activity for that extended lunch hour around the office conference table. If you have a projector, hook up a DVD player or computer and screen Disney’s Brave during your office Irish pot luck luncheon. Not only is this an awe inspiring coming of age tale, but it’s also PG so you don’t need to worry about backlash from Human Resources. Enjoy a few non-alcoholic beverages and some popcorn with your St. Patrick’s Day movie screening.

St. Patty’s Snake Hunt

One popular legend surrounding Saint Patrick, is that he banished all of the snakes from Ireland after a 40 day fast. Recreate the legend in your office using toy snakes. Make sure they’re brightly colored in case there’s a real reptile hanging out in one of the cubicles. You can also isolate the hunting ground to a conference room or other designated area, if your office is large like mine.

In a pinch, you can get a bunch of gummy worms to substitute for snakes. Keep track of how many are hidden so that you don’t attract bugs. I’d recommend sending out an email with your plan so that none of your co-workers freak out and call the facilities folks! Happy hunting this St. Patty’s Day.

Irish Trivia Game

Test your co-workers knowledge of Irish history. Gather some random St. Patty’s trivia, offer up some sweet prizes to the winning team. You can even have a small pot of “gold coins” those chocolates covered in gold foil stashed in a plastic kettle. Run the game like an episode of Jeopardy and distribute coins to individuals who are able to answer your questions. Here’s some sample questions:

Decorate The Office in Green

Bring some flair from the Emerald Isle to your office space. Spruce things up with Irish decorations like 4 leaf clover cutouts and rainbows. Make it an office event by having your co-workers pitch in and do some DIY crafting. Just make sure you have plenty of green construction paper, and scissors!

Root Beer Float Tasting

Just because you can’t have actual beer, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little play on words fun this Saint Patrick’s Day. To enjoy an alcohol free St. Patrick’s Day, all you really need is a variety of Root Beer, and some vanilla ice cream to make a St. Patty’s themed ice cream social. If you’re feeling really brave, try grabbing different flavors of ice cream to see if you can come up with a delicious non-alcoholic beverage you can share with the kids later!

Jam To Irish Bands

Create a Pandora playlist, or just a YouTube playlist and jam out with your office mates this St. Patrick’s Day. If you’re looking for popular musicians with an Irish background, try some of these:

  • U2
  • The Dublinners
  • Hozier
  • The Cranberries
  • The Script
  • Dropkick Murphys

Just double check the songs on your playlist and make sure there isn’t any offensive language that could get you into trouble at the office.

Share Some Irish Literature

If you’re looking for an entertaining way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at the office, you can try sharing some entertaining Irish literature. Think of it as a poetry club reading. Share your favorite excerpt from Oscar Wilde, or maybe do a reading of a few entertaining Irish Limericks. Propose a traditional toast to St. Patty with some not-so-Irish coffee. Whatever your chosen literature, it’ll be a cultural experience that the whole office can share in.

Final Thoughts

Just because you can’t partake in the traditional drinking games this St. Patrick’s Day, doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Try a combination of these fun set of St. Patrick’s Day activities for the office, to see if you can breathe a breath of fresh Irish air into your daily grind.
